From Packstation to the future
By launching Smarcel, the founders of the DHL Packstation address today's greatest parcel delivery challenges, such as insufficient amount of couriers, heavy urban traffic, extreme packaging waste and excessive CO2-emissions.

Merging hardware with innovative software
Yukawa has been collaborating with IRD as entrepreneurs for their business from the early hours on. Yukawa did not only craft the overarching digital concept, but also implemented a globally scalable digital ecosystem that integrates the mobile lockers with the leading shipping carriers, ecommerce partners and consumers.
A holistic IoT ecosystem
Yukawa’s scope within this partnership includes:
- Designing the IoT-architecture
- Implementing the central cloud infrastructure
- Crafting the embedded software layer on the smarcel locker
- Building the loading and unloading software logic
- Integrating cooperating carriers
- Developing the mobile App (Flutter)

SISPaD:
Smart IT for Sustainable Parcel Delivery

Yukawa Exponential GmbH, in collaboration with Innovative Robot Delivery GmbH (IRD), is developing the software infrastructure for a new generation of mobile parcel lockers – known as Smart Lockers – as part of the EFRE-funded SISPaD project. At the heart of the project is the advancement of AI-powered optimization algorithms, scalable backend services, and an end-customer app to enable more sustainable and efficient last-mile parcel delivery. The project runs from October 2025 to September 2027 and is funded by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) as part of the GreenEconomy.IN.NRW innovation competition.
The project aims at the following goals:
- Development of an AI-based location optimization algorithm (Smarcel Locator) that dynamically positions mobile parcel stations to minimize detours for recipients and reduce delivery routes and CO₂ emissions
- Building scalable, secure backend services to connect diverse parcel service providers through open integration standards and a flexible API architecture
- Development of an user-customer app (Smarcel App), including a white-label version for parcel service providers, enabling simple and automated parcel collection at mobile stations
- Real-world piloting of the solution with logistics partners across Germany, Switzerland, and further European markets
- Delivering a measurable contribution to reducing urban delivery traffic and packaging waste through the application of intelligent digital systems
Our Innovative Path:
Smarcel stands out from many startups by positioning itself right at the heart of the dynamic and expanding e-commerce market. This promises significant market and growth potential. At the same time, Smarcel effectively addresses the challenges in parcel delivery posed by the growth of e-commerce and offers superior solutions.
